Alan Iverson plays guard for the Detroit Pistons Basketball team. In spite of his many awards and achievements in basketball, he is often acknowledged for his controversial behavior. He started his career as first overall draft pick in 1996 for the Philadelphia 76ers and continued to excel in basketball while playing for them. He was a part of the team that led the 76ers to the NBA playoffs in 2002-2003 and was named MVP in 2001 and 2005. He played for the Sixers until a fallout with the head coach led to his being traded in 2006 to the Denver Nuggets. While he played well for them and is now playing for the Detroit Pistons, he will still be most recognizable in a Sixers Jersey. It was what he was wearing when he rose to fame.
If you'd like to be Alan Iverson for Halloween, you'll have to find a his jersey with his name and original number on the Sixers team, but his costume is a lot more complex than that. He has many fans that admire him, not only for his expertise on the basketball court, but for his personal style and attitude as well. He is a true celebrity that will be recognized and (hopefully) appreciated wherever he goes.
One element of his signature style is his tattoos. He has many and they are all important to him. If you want to dress up as Alan Iverson for Halloween, you'll have to find a lot of temporary ones that will have to suffice.
Among his tattoos are "Cru Thik", his wife and kids names, a pair of hands in prayer between his mother and grandmother's initials, a cross of daggers knitted together that say, "Only the Strong Survive", and the Chinese symbol for respect. There are many online references for detailed descriptions and photos of these tattoos.
Another very important part of his personal style is his hair. He wears it braided into cornrows most often. Not only is this a practical way to keep hair neat and out of the way when playing sports, it allows for intricate patterns of snaking design. If you have hair that is the right texture and long enough, you can braid your own. If you don't you can easily find an appropriate wig online.
Along with his uncommon hairstyle, he wears a thin mustache and goatee occasionally, but these are not necessary. He often uses terry cloth headbands while playing, and this is one of the clearest ways to indicate and Iverson costume. He also wears an arm sleeve that is protective of his elbow. While there are rumors circulating that it's because he has a tattoo containing profanity on his arm, it is actually because it has been surgically repaired, and requires the sleeve for protection.
Once you have the jersey, the tattoos, the hair, and the sleeve, you're almost complete in your costume. If you're going to be Alan Iverson for a night, you'll want to carry a basketball as a prop, and if you can play, then go ahead and show off. If not, then just relax and enjoy your night off of the grueling NBA schedule.
Above I mentioned that you would need a costume wig. The best way to find quality Halloween Wigs is to do a Google Search. You can also find fantastic Afro Wigs the same way.
