First, whenever you consider getting a tattoo you've got to keep safety in the front of your mind. That means being sure of your potential tattooers skill and professionalism, so don't go with your best friend's brother just because he is cheap, ensure that there are sufficient sterilization procedures in place in the form of an Autoclave and a general attitude towards cleanliness in the tattoo parlor, including covering clip cord, spray bottles etc with plastic to prevent contamination.
Once you're satisfied as to the safety it's time to get involved and begin getting a tattoo. The first stage is to prepare the skin, which will involve disinfecting the area to be tattooed. Then a stencil is applied and allowed to dry before you actually start getting a tattoo!
The first steps in this stage of getting a tattoo are to go over the stencil outline he has laid down with the tattooing machine. You should see some smooth lines appearing and the tattoo starting to take shape. The skin will then be cleaned again so that there is no excess ink on the skin. Next, a little shading is added using a different machine or at least a different needle to start making the tattoo look like the end product. The skin is then again cleaned.
The next stage in getting a tattoo is to apply color. This can be a long process with the artist going over each line twice or more to ensure that the tattoo doesn't look uneven when dried.
Once completely colored, the tattoo is sprayed and cleaned once more. At this stage it is completely normal for there to be a little blood and the artist will clean this away using a towel and the bleeding will stop after a couple of hours.
Finally, a bandage is applied which will have to be kept on for a few hours. But after that you're good to go and you've completed your task of getting a tattoo!
