The first time you consider getting a tattoo, what question comes to mind? For most, it is whether the tat is going to hurt and, if so, how much. Most of the common places people get tats aren't to sensitive. Still, there are some places where it is going to hurt like the devil.
Pain. Tattoo. The two words seem to go together. For some, this isn't a bad thing. Pain is often considered a part of the right of passage when getting a tattoo - a feeling to focus on as part of the spiritual connection to the meaning of the ink you are getting. For others, that's a bunch of baloney and pain is something to be avoided at all costs!
Whatever your feelings, pain is almost always a question to be considered. As a very general rule, the less a part of your body is exposed to the sun, the more sensitive it will be. "Sensitive" is another way of saying that getting a tat in this area is going to hurt. Consider your arm area for example. A popular tat involves getting some type of band around your upper arm. Anyone who has done this can tell you very clearly that there is not much pain when getting inked on the outer area of the arm. The opposite is true for the underside of the arm that sits up against the ribs and is not exposed to the sun.
This general rule applies for other areas as well. Getting a tat on your calf isn't too bad, but one on the thigh can be a real killer. A tattoo on your back isn't half bad, but getting ink on your side over your rib cage can be excruciating.
As with most rules, there are exceptions to this one. There are certain parts of your body that are just more sensitive regardless of how exposed they are. The area above your lip and below your nose is one of the more sensitive areas on your body. I'm not sure why you would get a tattoo there, but keep in mind they will probably have to strap you down.
The opposite is also true. There are parts of your body that are rarely exposed to the sun, but don't hurt all that much when getting a tattoo. For instance, you can get a tattoo on your butt cheeks with a minimum of fuss even though they don't see the sun all that often.
When it comes to getting inked, it really doesn't hurt too much. Most people that have problems with it do so because they freak themselves out. If you are worried about it, ask yourself a basic question. If getting a tattoo hurts so much, why do so many people have them?
