As time goes on, things change, society changes - and in a lot of fields, women are still coming out of the dark ages even in the area of tattoo art. At one time is was very radical for a woman to get tattoos. Ages ago the association was more of a circus/freak show mentality. Not so today.
Not only are more and more women getting tatoos, but they are branching away from the mainstream choices of butterflies, flowers, and fairies. You are now seeing vintage Sailor Jerry designs, skulls, Koi fish, and even pinup model tattoos. Any tattoo style you've seen on a male, I would bet there is a female with a similar design.
One only has to watch an episode of Miami Ink or LA Ink ( and how many women artists on that show??) to get a feel of the clientele you'll see entering a tattoo parlor. A close friend of mine (a female tattoo artist and parlor owner) was curious about this and decided to check her records over a few months time and found that OVER 50% were women. Granted, many of these women voiced the choice of a female artist due to their personal preference. I would say that these stats are not that far off from the big picture. I'm not aware of any current survey of this count but give it time and if it is not the case now, it may be in time. At the very least, women will keep up with the men's pace of collecting ink!
