Legally, can I make a copy of a vhs for my own personal use?
I just got one of those vhs to dvd copiers to transfer all of my old home movies onto dvds and my mom then suggested that I could copy all my old vhs movies to dvds to make some room in my tv cabinet.
Now, my question is: if the copy is for my own personal use and not for distribution to any third party, is that against the copyright law?
I can't sell the original vhs? If I did make the copies, I was just going to donate all the vhs tapes to the goodwill.
This was the reasoning behind congress passing a law for the VHS to DVD recorders and thats why the sales have fallen. The movie companies don't want you to record you old movies as they want you to buy them on DVD yet they are not releasing all the titles of older films until the market demands it.
The other is that the VHS to DVD recorders usually don't work that great so many use a S-VHS recorder and export to a DVD Recorder. Do a test of the VHS tapes to DVD if it works more power to you and your freedom of video releases.
UPDATE:
I have 16 boxes of VHS tapes I'm letting them go to waste, as for the recording there are two ways to go the DVD Recorder which does look good as it has an upconversion on it. The other takes longer yet looks tops we use the Grass Valley ADVC300 which encodes the video upon importing making it look almost DV quality. Found that out years ago when we had to import video from families that were trying to save their memories.
